Big tech and banks named in authentication technology suit
IBM, Bank of America, Microsoft, Sony, and others accused of patent infringement over authentication and verification tech | Suit by New York registered company alleges willful infringement and induced infringement.
IBM, Bank of America, Microsoft, Sony Interactive Entertainment, along with four other companies have been named in separate lawsuits over authentication technology.
The suits, filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, accused the companies of infringing Secure Matrix’s patent concerning methods for authentication and verification.
New York-based Secure Matrix claimed the companies have infringed its US patent number 8,677,116, titled "Systems and methods for authentication and verification", which covers “innovative” technologies in that area.
Secure Matrix alleged that the companies, which also include Binance Holdings, Line Corporation, Rakuten, and Zoho Corporation, directly infringed one or more claims of the ‘116 patent by manufacturing, using, selling, and importing products that use the patented technology.
The complaint alleged that the companies have continued infringing activities despite being notified of the patent claims, adding willful infringement to the complaint.
Secure Matrix also accused the defendants of induced infringement by selling products that encourage customers to use them in ways that allegedly violate its patent.
