Bird & Bird

Firm Overview:

Bird & Bird’s trademark offering in China is consistently rated as a leading firm across its non-contentious and contentious practices. “Very good reputation, good at what it’s doing” with room to deliver more on the potential of the firm’s corporate practice, is the assessment. Since 2009, Bird & Bird has had an association with local Chinese law firm, Lawjay Partners, enabling the firm to assist clients in contentious IP matters in mainland China by litigating in the Chinese courts.

Team Overview:

Hank Leung in Hong Kong, “a very reliable trademark partner”, advises media and consumer clients on enforcement and monetisation in China and the APAC region. He advises gaming and esports teams on IP protection and regulatory compliance, and on NFTs in gaming and in-game sponsorships.

Matthew Laight “has seen enough and has credibility on trademarks” is the head of Bird & Bird’s IP practice in Asia-Pacific. Laight has worked in Asia for over 25 years and his practice covers contentious and non-contentious intellectual property. Japanese native Rieko Michishita has lived in China for over 28 years and provides tri-lingual advice on contentious and non-contentious IP matters, working closely with the firm’s Japanese clients.

Dorrie Wong, qualified in Hong Kong and based in Beijing, is the general manager of Bird & Bird’s Beijing IP Agency, where she leads a team of 25 and works closely with the firm’s associated law firm Lawjay on trademark portfolio management and litigations.
