Wanhuida Intellectual Property

Firm overview:

Wanhuida Intellectual Property began as Beijing Wan Hui Da Intellectual Property Agency in 1999, which spawned Beijing Wan Hui Da Law Firm, and later a combined Wanhuida intellectual property service.

Trademarks has been a traditional practice strength of Wanhuida since its creation. The firm has generated a series of firsts and landmark cases in trademark prosecution and litigation in China. Examples include,

  • the first registration of a colour combination trademark
  • the first exhibition priority application with the China Trademark Office
  • the first well-known trademark status to an unregistered trademark by a court

The firm has also contributed to the development of trademark laws in China and is actively exploring parallel import, fair use, co-existence, liability of online trading platforms, super well-known trademark status and other areas of trademarks practice.

Wanhuida serves clients worldwide, in China, Europe, the United States, Japan, Korea and other countries. The firm’s clients are represented in the consumer goods, chemical, pharmaceutical, biotech, mechanical, electronics and telecommunications industries.

Team overview:

Wanhuida is home to around 450 employees, with 120 lawyers specialised in IP litigation and enforcement work, 90 trademark attorneys, and other professionals, including investigators and supporting staff. Many of the firm’s individuals are recognized as leaders in their fields. They have broad perspectives from private practice, in-house counselling, government service in courts, police departments and administrative agencies.

Dr. Huang Hui is a member of Wanhuida’s management committee, an intellectual property counsel, an academic, and a veteran lawyer. Dr Hui represents clients in all levels of Chinese courts up to the Supreme People’s Court in a wide variety of intellectual property litigations, some of which have become landmark cases.

Gang Bai is the founding partner and chair of the management Committee at Wanhuida Intellectual Property. Bai is a prominent figure in China’s intellectual property field and has represented clients’ prosecuting, enforcement and litigating interests since the 1990s. In 2005, he was invited by the State Intellectual Property Strategy Working Conference to join its advisory panel in drafting the "China National Intellectual Property Strategy" released in June 2008.

Haiyan Ren is a member of the management committee and is the most experienced trademark attorney at the firm. She started practising in 1994 and was a co-founder of Wan Hui Da in 1999. As the joint head of the firm’s trademark practice group and the managing coordinator for all anti-counterfeiting, infringement and unfair competition cases, she has guided a team of more than 300 trademark and patent attorneys and attorneys-at-law.
