Claudia Fernandini

Claudia Fernandini began her IP career at Procter & Gamble in Peru and later established Fernandini Abogados, which gained recognition at a time when very few firms were led by women in Latin America. Latin American IP group ClarkeModet acquired the Peruvian business and continued under Fernandini’s leadership for 16 years. During this period, she developed a profound interest in patent practice and searching services, focusing on developing local markets while serving foreign clients’ interests in Peru.In 2017, Fernandini co-founded Mertz Peru with Stephany Soto. The firm distinguished itself through diversity, innovation, and a flexible work model, attracting both Peruvian and international clients. Mertz built unique practice areas, like the protection of trade secrets, access to genetic resources, plant breeder rights, patent landscaping and other services.As Mertz’s lead litigator, Fernandini has achieved notable successes in challenging patent applications and defending IP rights. Her approach combines meticulous research, strategic thinking, and detailed preparation, earning her recognition for her expertise in patent and trademark matters.Fernandini is actively involved in professional associations and participates in international conferences. She has made significant contributions to Peru’s IP landscape, including simplifying patent assignment processes and advocating for more accessible IP registration procedures.Her work has been instrumental in modernising IP practices in Peru, particularly during the technological transitions prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
