Crowell & Moring continues expansion with new partner in Brussels

Former Allen & Overy senior associate has expertise in EU digital regulation |  New partner in Brussels office will advise US clients on IP protection in the EU.

IP litigator Edward Taelman has joined Crowell & Moring’s Brussels office as a partner after spending 13 years at Allen & Overy, where he was most recently a senior associate.

Taelman will use his expertise in trademarks, patents, designs and copyrights to advise US clients on brand protection and digital regulation in the EU.

He has litigated IP cases before the Belgian and European courts for clients in sectors including e-commerce, life sciences, media, and fast-moving consumer goods, and also advises on non-contentious matters such as licensing, franchise and research collaboration agreements.

Taelman has worked on several landmark cases regarding the liability of online platforms for IP infringement, and has a strong practice focused on the regulatory framework for digital services.

This has included assisting clients in complying with regulations including the Digital Services Act, and the General Data Protection Regulation.

David Ervin, co-leader of Crowell & Moring’s advertising and brand protection group, said: “The EU leads the way with regulations like the Digital Services Act.

“As US-based companies prepare for similar regulatory enforcement, Edward’s experience leading organisations through digital platform liability issues will make him a valued advisor to clients with significant online businesses.”

Commenting on his move, Taelman said: “Crowell is a leader in the IP space.

“I am excited to join the firm and look forward to working with the firm’s lawyers to grow our trademark and other IP litigation capabilities in Europe.”

Crowell has been expanding its IP practice over the past few years, including joining forces with Chicago-based Brinks Gilson & Lione in 2021 and acquiring a three-person IP team in New York in 2023.
